STEM Careers Partnership with GSA

GSA is in the early stages of an exciting new STEM careers partnership with the engineering company Siemens. It consists of some initial showcase events, delivered by scientist and presenter Fran Scott, followed by more events delivered by Siemens staff, followed by some training for others so the message can continue to be delivered to girls around the country. Part of the ‘deal’ is that we extend invitations to neighbouring state schools wherever feasible and, indeed, we have already done that at the launch which took place at Withington Girls’ School last month.

Siemens are keen to have one of the big showcase events in Hull (where Siemens has an office) on 11 October (International Day of the Girl) but the nearest GSA school to Hull is an hour away. Does ASGS have a school in or very close to Hull that would like to embrace this opportunity?

The event will give your school’s Year 8 or 9 girls the opportunity to hear all about unusual careers in engineering and other sciences. It’s a great show and makes some very important points about careers in general, as well as STEM careers in particular. In addition there a few whizz-bang demonstrations! Taking part will also enable your school to build on existing partnerships and/or create new relationships with neighbouring schools by inviting some of them to join you and, indeed, we hope that you would invite girls from Queen Margaret’s (GSA), which is approximately an hour away. Siemens will provide a goody bag for each girl who attends.

To host this event, the school will need:

  1. Year 8 or 9 availability on 11 October 2016.
  2. The ability to meet Siemens’ criteria for the show. These are:
  • Clear stage area with approx. dimension of 5m wide x 3m deep.
  • 3x 6’ trestle tables on stage.
  • Double height ceiling over stage area
  • Projector and screen
  • Microphone if audience larger than 100 (we anticipate it will be)
  • Ability to isolate fire/smoke alarms within performance area.
  1. A willingness – and some physical capacity - to invite the same age girls from your nearest GSA school (Queen Margaret’s, York) and other state schools if feasible.

There is no fee for this, but your school may choose to put on some refreshments for visiting adults on the day.
